What is/are Seromycin?

Seromycin (which contains the active ingredient cycloserine) is a powerful antibiotic. How strong is it? It is the drug most often used as treatment for tuberculosis (that's consumption to your great grandmother). Of course, that's not the only thing Seromycin can treat; indeed, it is occasionally doled out for a wide array of bacterial infections which have proven resistant to other, weaker antibiotics.

As with many antibiotics, Seromycin (cycloserine) has a few rules you must follow in order for it to be truly effective. For one, you must take entire prescribed amount. Because it is such a strong drug, your symptoms may subside very quickly after the antibiotics enter your blood stream. This is good for you, but also dangerous because the feeling of recovery prompts many to assume they are healed and abandon the treatment. However, the entire course is required in order to kill all of the bacteria in your system; otherwise, there is a good chance that you will face a relapse and the bacteria might be stronger the second time around.

Seromycin is in the FDA Pregnancy Category C, which basically means there is a large question mark around its relationship to pregnancy. If you are an expecting mother, you should discuss with a physician whether or not it’s a viable option. New mothers should also proceed with caution because the antibiotic could travel through breast milk.

Watch out for potential side effects, which include nausea, tremors and periods of confusion.
