Norvasc and High Blood Pressure

Norvasc is the brand name for amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker used to treat such conditions as high blood pressure and angina (chest pain which is caused by a “spasm” or twitch in the heart muscle). Both of these diseases have some association with heart disease. The drug works by calming the muscles in the heart, allowing blood to flow smoother and reducing the instances of angina pain. In effect, it allows more blood to travel through the heart.

There are a number of potential side effects when taking Norvasc. One of them is edema (or fluid retention) in the lower limbs. The list also includes dizziness, stomach pain and insomnia. Some side effects may seem unrelated to the drug itself (but are not): this includes the growth of breasts on male users and jaundice.

Some people with coronary artery disease should avoid Norvasc. Whereas others it will help, sufferers of this disease could actually be harmed, experience more angina than previous or potentially face death. It may even provoke a heart attack. The drug also interacts with alcohol, and the combined effect may lower your blood pressure too much; you should talk to your doctor about whether or not it is okay to drink while you are on Norvasc.

Many people are satisfied with their positive experiences on the drug. It often makes those consuming it feel well; sometimes, they feel so much better they are prompted to use less of the medication. This is always a mistake. Just because you feel good does not mean your blood pressure is normal – it could still be high, and you could still be at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke.

It is a good idea to pair the drug with a general positive change in life, ensuring that the food you eat is healthy and that you get plenty of exercise. This will take some of the pressure off of the drug and also reduce the likelihood that you will develop other disorders and diseases that may need to be treated with medication too – such as diabetes.

Many people will attest to the fact that the drug is effective and has clearly dropped their blood pressure down to safer levels. This was not enough for everyone; one person, for example, described getting terrible cramps in the lower leg, to the extent that it was debilitating.  Yet even more people found it to be just the right match.
