All About Levaquin

Maybe you – like millions and probably billions of other people across the globe – are familiar with the daily struggles of allergies. It’s bad, but you’ve got it under control for the most part… or so you think. Then, one day after a week of battling the allergies, you wake up and realize that everything has gotten much worse: your sinuses ache, your skin aches, your teeth ache, your nose aches… and on, and on. On the one hand, it might just be a cold getting even worse; on the other hand, you may have become afflicted with sinusitis, a condition where the sinuses become inflamed and painful.

How did they get that way? There are a million possible reasons. Invading bacteria and viruses could be the culprits – particularly if your sinusitis shows up after a prolonged battle with a cold infection. It could also be the weather (too dry, for example) or too many nasal decongestants (even though they felt so nice when they cleared up your nose and let you sleep). Even smoking could be the root cause. Then again, figuring out the cause doesn’t do anything to solve the problem. However, medications such as Levaquin do.

Levaquin is basically a kind of antibiotic which doctors usually roll out once they realize your sinuses are inflamed. Very often, the drug is useful and helps the resolve the issue, though there are instances where it does not (usually when a virus is the impetus behind the inflammation. Viruses, you may know, cannot be cured but must be instead be warded off by the human body, in a process that usually takes time.

You can take Levaquin in a variety of ways, depending on your preference and your doctor’s orders. One way is the obvious: it comes in small pills that vary from 250 mg to 750 mg. There are also soft pills (or jelly tablets) which are the same except that they dissolve quicker on the tongue and are faster-action. Yet a third way to beat the sinusitis is to take your medication in completely liquid format; this is probably the fastest, easiest but least pleasant way to consume Levaquin. However you take your medicine, try to keep to a regular schedule. Levaquin is an antibiotic, and those work best when there is a constant level of them in your body.  Consider taking it as soon as you wake up so you don’t forget. While you’re at, make sure you take all of the pills prescribed to you, even if the symptoms of your sinusitis subside. The bacterial cause could still be living inside of you, dormant and waiting for the opportunity to strike back.

Pay attention to any possible allergies you may have – in general, try to discuss your medical history with your doctor before you begin to take this antibiotic. Taking the drug if you are allergic to it could do more than cause a mild allergic reaction – it could actually kill you.

Common side effects include dizziness, pain, itchy skin and numbness.
