Glucophage and Diabetes
Diabetes is a serious condition which could lead to death if not treated. It occurs when a body is not able to create or properly regulate insulin levels. Since the insulin is out of control, so too become the glucose levels (which would have otherwise been removed by insulin). And finally the high levels of glucose slowly destroy the body - quite literally everything from the toes to eyes and vision capabilities. Diabetes is treated in a couple of ways. First, diet is regulated to reduce the number of sugars (since glucose itself is a sugar). Secondly, there should be some kind lifestyle change that incorporates exercise; since diabetes Type II is often caused by obesity, reducing your weight can help reduce your need for insulin shots. And finally, medicine is prescribed to do the job that the body cannot do – supply the needed insulin. Glucophage is one of these medicines.
The drug was designed to keep the amount of sugar in check – yet it has also been discovered to have a secondary positive effect on people with diabetes: because it reduces the appetite (making people want to eat less often) it also contributes to weight loss. It is worthwhile to note that Glucophage is developing a reputation as a weight loss drug in general, because it has the same appetite-ending effect on people who are not afflicted with diabetes.
Remember that, of course, it does have side effects and many of which are not as positive as its weight loss capabilities. It causes a lot of stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. Those are all uncomfortable things to have to bear but the results are promising enough that it just might be worth the potential sickness. In at least one study, at least 80% of women lost a significant amount of weight and managed to keep it off.
