What is Flagyl?
It is easy to get Flagyl confused for an antifungal treatment; after all, it’s a popular drug and sometimes used to treat conditions that seem very much like a fungus problem. But, that is all just an illusion. Flagyl is an antibiotic, frequently doled to out to treat not a fungal issue (like a yeast infection) but a bacterial one (such as bacterial vaginosis). It is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria, meaning bacteria that does not required (or even want) the presence of oxygen to procreate and thrive.
It is effective at treating bacterial infections because it kills generous amounts of bacteria living in the body. Since it doesn’t have to continue fighting away dangerous germs, your body is free to recover. It’s important to note that because it does kill all bacteria, you might need a way to replenish the good bacteria residing in you. One way to do this is to counter the antibiotics with probiotics (good flora which help your system digest food property). You can get probiotics in either a supplement form or by eating a yogurt a day.
Aside from killing all the probiotics in your system, there are a few other negative side effects. For one, combining it with alcohol will likely cause you extreme sickness (nausea, vomiting, etc).
Also remember that the body is interconnected; an imbalance in bacteria could well lead to an imbalance in yeast, thereby causing a new problem (just as you figured out how to fix the old one – with Flagyl). But do not attempt to treat a yeast infection with an antibiotic; instead, consult with your doctor or seek out an over-the-counter anti-fungal ointment.
