All About Aricept
You might ask, what is Aricept and what does it do? Consider this: One of the hardest things to do is watch your loved ones' mind wither and die while the body remains strong. Imagine not being recognized by your own mother or father. It is a terrible tragedy that is the sad fate for the families affected by dementia (often a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease). It can strike at almost any age but is usually the domain of the middle aged to elderly. The afflicted experience cognitive problems ranging from occasional forgetfulness to being unable to walk, eat and eventually breathe.
Advances in technology, however, are beginning to hold off the dark cloud of dementia. Now granted there is no permanent cure, but even a few months or years provides families with time to enjoy each other. Aricept is one of those drugs, prescribed to patients with dementia in the hopes of saving their minds while there is still life in them.
The drug is not new. In fact, the FDA approved it about a decade ago; the catch is that it was only given to the more mild cases while those with severe dementia were left to fend for themselves. Now, however, it has been upgraded and is therefore accessible for all people with Alzheimer’s disease. Even before that, Aricept was making waves across the globe. Studies regarding its effectiveness were conducted across the globe (including in countries where there were no limitations on the severity of dementia upon prescription), particularly in Sweden and Japan where the drug was honed. These studies all showed a noticeable impact on cognitive behavior.
Some may get frustrated at the prospect of having had an effective treatment available all those years and never knowing it could help the more severe cases, but science is always moving forward, developing new cures and treatment programs for the sick and afflicted.
It is never all right to have to watch people you care about die, mind first. You cannot even share and reflect upon the treasure trove of memories you have built over the years with people with dementia. All of that feeling and thought is simply gone. A cure would be idea; however, in its absence drugs like Aricept provides a welcome reprieve from the steady march of age and disease.
