Alcoholism and Antabuse
Alcohol addiction is a dangerous, deadly disease which some people struggle all their lives to defeat. Like any addiction, it winds its way into an addicts mind, urging them to drink again - just one more time, to feel just a little bit better. It is hard for a person to fight alcoholism; so, to aid in the battle, the FDA has approved "aversive" drugs. They are prescriptions that make the alcoholic unable to enjoy (or even keep down) alcohol. One of these drugs is Antabuse (containing the active ingredient disulfiram).
Antabuse is not a cure for alcohol dependency. It cannot take away the urge to drink nor can it change an alcoholic’s mind about anything. That aspect of recovery remains a personal challenge, best dealt with through resolve, faith and a generous amount of counseling. Instead, it may be thought of as a deterrent. It simply ruins the pleasurable effects associated with drinking (often described as a buzz or sense of confidence and euphoria).
Research for this drug was conducted in both Europe, so most of the studies have European origins; they show that the drug does, in fact, cause many individuals to avoid drinking. The craving to get drunk still persists; however, because of the negative effects caused by the drug, it is easier to resist temptation, thereby breaking the habit component of alcoholism.
Antabuse is not friendly to your system. It is effective precisely because it causes pain and harm: hot flashes, vomiting, headaches, difficulty breathing, muscle pain, hyperventilation – the list goes on. This occurs because it prevents your body from turning alcohol into innocuous acetic acid; instead, the dangerous toxic acetaldehyde levels get higher and higher until symptoms develop.
It is a serious matter – death is listed as a possible complication – but so is addiction. If you’re having a hard time staying away from the pub, consider taking Antabuse and consult your doctor.
