Emergency Contraceptive Pills: Levonelle (Alesse) and ellaOne
When it comes to sex, one enduring truth is this: things sometimes go wrong. You start off with a plan to avoid unwanted pregnancy (maybe a condom or regular birth control pills) and proceed with gusto - only to realize, when it’s far too late, that the condom tore or you forgot to take the pill. Or maybe you never intended to need contraception at all and simply got carried away in the heat of the moment. It is precisely these situations for which emergency contraceptive pills were created. The two EC pills currently on the market are Levonelle (Alesse) and ellaOne (ulipristal acetate).
Both of the drugs are considered safe for the vast majority of women. They differ in the time-frame in which they are effective, however. Alesse can be taken the first 3 days (or 72 hours) after unprotected sex, but its effectiveness decreases notably for every day that passes. If taken the day of sex (or within a 12 hour period of so) it has a 95% chance of preventing pregnancy; yet the rate dips to 85% the day after, and then again to 58% on the final day. The numbers aren't as well-known for ellaOne, but it is estimated that almost 100 percent of women who take it are able to avoid pregnancy, particularly when it is consumed within a handful of hours after unprotected sex. There is more time to take ellaOne (120 hours), but it should still be taken as soon as possible.
You can take both Levonelle (Alesse) and ellaOne at any time, including while menstruating.
Remember that if your next period doesn't come on time, you should visit the doctor. Though they place the odds in your favor when used correctly, neither of the EC pills are 100% effective at preventing a pregnancy. A missed period could indicate that the pill was not successful. It could also indicate a complication of the drug, so discuss the issue with a doctor as soon as possible. Likewise it is important to note that neither of the pills is intended to act as a regular form of contraceptive and not the same as regular birth control pills. You could hurt yourself and your reproductive system if you attempt to take the pills daily.
There are several potential side effects of both drugs. Neither one should be consumed when you are pregnant (and do not attempt to use it as an abortion pill, because they work by interfering with the fertilization process, not by destroying an already-fertilized egg). Alesse may cause problems for people with galactose intolerance, hepatic dysfunction and other deficiencies. Those with asthma may be unable to take ellaOne. Always seek the advice of a doctor if you’re not sure about possible interactions.
In this day and age, it is possible to have a fulfilling, happy sex life without the constant fear of pregnancy. Generally, this is accomplished through the use of contraceptives like condoms and birth control pills, but even when those fail, there is a solution. Levonelle and ellaOne are both effective means of preventing pregnancy.
